Many Boomer parents are often afraid of looking outdated to their teenagers. They are afraid that they will be dismissed by their kids. Many of us want to be the understanding parent who “gets” teens.
What teens want are parents. They have friends or access to friends. What teens tell us frequently is that they want parents who
-remain present in their lives,
-share wisdom, not lectures,
-understand that rebellion is not disconnection
-provide a safe place to go in a crazy world
-take their world seriously
-don’t expect confirmation that we are doing a good job.
